The Garfield panel randomizer
At last technology has finally reached the point that it can even make Garfield funny.

(and by 'funny', I of course mean 'sick and bizarre'.)

There's another kind of funny?

Who knew?

You realize this is exactly what Jim Davis does, right?

It's strips like these that make me think he's the kind of guy that just sits in his cubicle all day trying to think of something funny.

In Davis' defense, that's mine, not his.

But yeah.

Actually, I'm not sure he even tries anymore.

Actually, as I understand it, he literally spends a few hours a month on the comic. The poor bastards sitting the cubicles are just trying to make enough money to buy their souls back from him.

How do you get the results of the shuffling

I tried looking at the source code

to know what to fiddle with.

Oh, sorry. You don't. You have to copy the screenshot into your graphics program (in this case Macromedia Fireworks), crop it, export as gif, upload it to your webhost and then use an <img src=""> tag to post it.

Seen that, and I don't get it. Unless she's saying it was dog ejaculate. And why would she have dog sperm sitting around on her examination table while she's examining a cat? and in a mug?

Okay, never mind. Yes, sick and bizarre. You're right.

That's why I had the "bizarre" option in there. Either it's a "John drinks dog semen," joke which fails to hold together, or it's a David Lynch sort of piece. Read it in a backwards/forwards Michael J. Anderson voice.

"Con-grad-u-laaations, Miiiister Arrrbuckle. Yoooou are going to give biiirth ... to a ... fiiine, hell-thee litt-ee-r of puuupeees."

Oh please don't mention David Lynch to me right now. I had to suffer through an entire interview with him blathering on about "finding his bliss" through Transcendental Meditation (TM).

Hah. Doesn't read that way, but I meant that (TM) as a snarky trademark symbol, actually.

If I scrutinized the epistemological zaniness of every artist I liked, I'd lose Leonard Cohen and that wouldn't do at all.

Why? What does Leonard believe in?

Leonard is extremely rational. I was pretending that he was a flakey, transplanted Californian for hypothetical purposes. Don't read up on Leonard. He thinks as you do and his allegories mean just what you suspect.

If you're setting the bar that low, I think Lynch's weekend levitation seminars deserve a pass. Though I always thought Cat got a raw deal in comparison with the bulk of quietly mainstream Christian performers. The aesthetic unfortunateness of moving from Tea for the Tillerman to A is for Allah aside, asking him whether the Rushdie fatwa is valid is about on par with asking a non-Universalist Christian whether they think their deity is currently having Ann Frank, Galen, Gandhi and Groucho Marx tortured for all eternity.

I totally did this in analog with a Garfield Treasury the former tenants left at my house. And I think the answer is that Jim Davis does come up with some really good single panels, they're just very rarely in the same cartoon.
