Send not to ask to whom the toll bills, it bills to thee
And a little something for the yokels:
With the introduction of a toll on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge, conversion of HOV to HOT lanes on SR167 and likely introduction of tolls on the 520 floating bridge and other routes in the Seattle area, the DOT has introduced "Good To Go", an in-vehicle electronic transponder system for automatic toll payment, allowing you to use a bypass lane at current and future toll gates and have the amount deducted directly from your account. Transponder users will also pay a substantially reduced toll over the cash-paying public.
During the introductory phase the transponders are being given out for free, but once the Tacoma Narrows tollgate opens this summer they will cost an as-yet-undetermined amount.
[note: the website FAQ says $10.65 for the internal and $27.00 for the external, but the DOT rep interviewed on NPR said the cost was yet to be determined, so those prices may well change. Other states with toll transponder systems charge up to $25 for internal tags.]
Here's the breakdown:
Transponder: -FREE-
Account balance: $30.00 minimum
Fare cost on the Tacoma Narrows:
Good To Go users: $1.75 (Southbound traffic only)
Cash toll: $3.00 (Southbound traffic only)
So if you find yourself using the Tacoma Narrows bridge more than a few times a year or want to get a transponder before it will cost you an equipment fee (which will likely be more than the required minimum account deposit), you can sign up
